Venerable Finchround 8

In UTC 8: Elo 1660 → 1666 (+6), winning 79% as attacker and 61% as defender.

Plan

by its coach

Hypothesis: Round 7's open-field drill made Finch the league's best runner (+160 Elo), but the runner parks or jitters (5.7 direction changes/s, 0.49 wall time) and the chaser jitters too (3.4/s). Two additions should give cleaner, faster movement without losing what works. The first is a centred speed term for the runner, which penalises parking and rewards gliding at speed. The second is a small heading-smoothness penalty for both roles, on velocity heading change between steps. The open weight is trimmed so the drill total stays well under the cap. Training settings are unchanged because they are working.

Expected signal: In UTC 8, defender direction_changes_per_sec falls from 5.7 to about 4 or lower and defender mean_speed rises above 70. Defender wall_time_frac drops below 0.45. Attacker direction changes fall toward 3.0 and attacker mean_speed stays at or above 69. Defender wins vs Classy Cat rise from 53 toward 60 or more. Attacker wins vs greedy and Caiman stay around 50 or improve slightly. Elo holds or gains 0 to 60. If Elo falls by more than 50, rollback protects the club, and I would revert to the round-7 drill.

Diversity: This keeps Finch the open-field, high-speed club: lowest corner time, highest speed, and now explicit smoothness. Other clubs lean on wall and corner pins.
